Firstly - What is Trampolining?

Done well, it can look phenomenal and make spectators stop in their tracks and pass comments like "Wow" or "Awesome". As a performer it can give you a buzz like no other; done badly and quite frankly its dangerous.

Trampolining is a sport which combines aerial somersaulting, twisting and various body landings, to provide an almost endless list of possibilities of skills, restricted only by human mental and physical capabilities. Trampolining falls under the Gymnastics banner and is now a discipline within the ever increasing range under this global term "gymnastics". Trampolining regained its position as an Olympic Sport back in Sydney 2000. Since then the popularity of the Sport is continuing to grow at a vast rate, encouraged by the recent trend in "home garden" trampolines.

Trampolining can be immense fun, but lets not forget how dangerous incorrect landings on a trampoline could be. It is therefore highly recommended that should you wish to learn this art form properly and safely, that you seek professional advice and coaching. As a point of reference, British Gymnastics (trampolining's Governing Body) is an excellent place to start.

Unlike other "simpler" sports, trampolining requires specialised equipment, which at the top end of the market will cost around £5000 per trampoline making the easily purchased "garden" trampolines no comparison at all. A fully trained trampolinist (more commonly called a gymnast) with world class equipment will manage heights of between 5 and 7 metres above the trampoline. This is roughly the same height as guttering on a standard two story house.

Competitive trampolining involves the gymnast performing routines of 10 linked skills. Depending of the level of competition the first routine will be a compulsory routine; everyone entering in that event must compete either the same routine or fulfil the same requirements. The second, and final, routine is the voluntary routine; a routine of the gymnasts choice. This round will also attract a difficulty score based on the moves performed. Remembering that the gymnast will also get an execution mark, the choice of routine has to be carefully selected - too easy and the difficulty score will not be enough, too difficult and the execution score will not be enough. Some of the top male gymnasts in the world are performing approximately 33 complete somersaults and 15 complete twists in their voluntary routines. Remember that's in 10 skills!!
