WORLD AGE GROUP GAMES FROM A PARENTS PERSPECTIVE

Dina was asked to write a paragraph or two about her experiences in Russia at the World Age Championships. As she is very busy with GCSE preparations I decided to write about her experiences as relayed to me over the phone  ish!

Dina was one of the last competitors to be selected for Russia because she didn’t quite attain the minimum score for D.M.T. needed for automatic selection. She was selected as a ‘wild card’ I have to say she is a bit ‘wild’ On 20.08.09 at 10.00 my mobile rang while we were visiting my dad in Manchester, it was Aarron telling us that the decision had finally been made and that I’d better start grovelling to my dad for the £1850 which was the cost to all  competitors.

We had been waiting for some weeks to know so it was quite a relief, then reality set in and I panicked at the amount of money I had to gather together in 3 weeks - £900.

Dina and I prepared for her departure, her, by training hard or as Aarron would say by training her vocabulary and dancing skills and very little else, me, by spending every last penny on some unnecessary items for Dina, then putting aside spending money. She wishes she had more.w

On the day of departure Friday 13th November - Dina initially wanted to refuse to travel on that date but I pointed out that the extra I would need to pay would be too pricey so she just had to get on with it.

I took Dina and our little dog Laicy to Heathrow, the drive was horrendous. There were squally winds and rain and it was still pitch black. I parked in the drop off zone and decided to ‘take a chance’ by leaving my car there knowing that there was a possibility of clamping and towing away. As I returned to my car I saw a Police tow truck pull alongside my 3 week old car. Being the big softy that I am I was shedding a few tears at the prospect of my ‘little’ girl going off without me to a far-away country, so I encouraged the tears to flow more and leant on my walking stick a bit heavier. The driver and the pcso were more concerned about my wellbeing and ability to drive and I  was given a genetle reminder that I had left my car illegally.

At that point my purse and the dog were still in the car and would have been towed and I had 1 bar left on my phone. Thank goodness for soft hearted people!

On arrival Dina rang to say I wouldn’t have liked Russia because it was snowing and very cold -I don’t do cold very well. She also raved about the hotel and her room and the amazing facilities open to her - the comfy sofa in a lounge area just outside her room with a receptacle for burnt things. Her good mood didn’t  last long because on the Sunday I answered my phone to the Dina’s crying voice saying ‘Mum, they won’t let me compete!’ I then had to listen to her breaking her heart in the background as the team doctor explained their reasons for withdrawing her from the competition. It Was bad news in more than one sense, obviously the worst was not being able to compete due to suspected crutiate ligament damage the other was that having accepted but not quite coming to terms with BG’s decision this meant that she had a lot more time on her hand to spend my money and I had to send more out to her via Anita Dallard for which I was very grateful. In total she took and spent £250 in 10 days. Then again she is a shop-a-holic who is usually without money to spend. Dina is a good haggler - she’s learnt from the best i.e. ME! Many of the GB squad called upon her services to buy  things for them by haggling with the vendors and she was successful every time.

She made lots of friends in the BG team and from a lot of the other competing countries.

The main complaints I got each day were about the food and the fact that she’d never be able to look a plate of rice or potatoes in the face again, and she’d start to look like an apple considering the amount she’d eaten over the 10 days. Apparently the scenery was fabulous!!!
